Your skin and scalp have sebaceous glands that produce oil or sebum. Sebum keeps your skin properly hydrated, supple, and healthy. It also gives your hair its healthy shine.
When your scalp produces excess sebum, however, your hair becomes greasy. Overproduction of sebum by the scalp is one of the leading oily hair causes.

- Hormonal changes
The body goes through hormonal changes under certain conditions. Puberty, the use of birth control pills, pregnancy, and hormonal health issues are just some of the reasons for increased hormones.
People with increased hormones are also more likely to have oily hair.
- Personal care routines
Oily hair can also be attributed to certain personal care routines. These routines include scrubbing the hair too much while shampooing, over-brushing the hair, and using too much moisturizing hair products like creams, waxes, and lotions.
- The constant use of ponytail
Putting your hair up in a ponytail causes dirt and oil to accumulate on the scalp beneath the ponytail band. The oil gets trapped and cannot be distributed to the hair shaft. The roots and strands in this area are oily.
How to Get Rid of Oily Hair
There are a few things that you can do to stop or prevent oiliness:
- Shampoo your hair the right way.

Don’t use it more than you have to, though, if you want to avoid white buildup. Use it lightly. Apply it only on hair layers closest to your scalp; these are usually the greasiest areas.
- Keep your hands off your hair.
Touching your hair excessively stimulates the production of sebum. Also, you tend to transfer the oil (and dirt) from your hands to your hair. Get your hands off your hair if you want a quick and simple way to prevent oily hair.
- Avoid the ponytail or bun hairstyle.
Keep your hair down if you want to reduce greasiness.
Confining your hair in a bun or in a ponytail traps the natural oils on the scalp. It prevents natural oils from moving down to the hair shafts. With a high concentration of oil on the scalp, you get a greasy scalp, and dry, brittle hair that is prone to split ends.
- Go on a hair detox.
Some people use a ton of hair cream, mousse, and wax to give dull, lifeless, and oily hair some shape and lift. Using too much of these products are likely to make your locks look greasy and feel flat.
