Hair Thinning: Causes, Prevention and Remedy

Posted by Shavon Walker on

One of the most common signs of aging is hair thinning and hair loss. Although more common in men, it is also experienced by a lot of women around the world. That is why hair growing products are scattered in the market. They come in various forms and prices but not everyone is proven safe and effective. Hence, careful examination of the product must be done before using them for your hair.

There are various reasons why many people experience hair thinning. Some say its hereditary why others argue that it is because of their lifestyle. To understand more about this problem, here are the top three causes of hair thinning and hair loss.

  • Stress

When the human body is exposed to undesirable conditions, its normal day-to-day processes are affected. The impact may depend on the nature and intensity of the stressor. It may cause a moderate delay in the process or may halt the process completely. Hair thinning, for example, is caused by physical and emotional stress. Traumatic experiences such as a motorcycle accident or a breakup may trigger a condition called telogen effluvium. This is a kind of hair loss that immediately occurs after a stressful event. In the process, the hair growth cycle becomes disrupted causing the hair to grow slowly or never grow at all. But after the recovery period, the hair growth cycle returns to its normal state.

  • Genes and Heredity

Yes, heredity belongs to the top three primary causes of hair loss among men and women. If you come from a family whose hair becomes thinner over time, there is a big chance that you may get it. For men, there is a condition called the male pattern baldness. It is caused by the combination of male hormones and genes, and it usually occurs at age 60. This condition leads to a hairline that resembles the letter M. For women, the counterpart of male pattern baldness is the androgenetic alopecia. Hair thinning all over the head is very evident and the hairline does not recede.

  • Misuse of Hair Products

Since there are tons of hair products available online, anybody can easily buy one for his or her hair. However, various researches show that there is an increasing number of people who experience hair thinning due to fake products.  Some shampoos, waxes, and styling gels contain toxic ingredients that are not indicated on their labels. Hence, without careful examination before using them, the effect on the hair is adverse.

Frequent overstyling of hair also causes hair thinning. Tight braids and high-heat treatments weaken the hair and cause it to fall out. Due to many hair strands that fall out every time the hair is styled, the hair becomes thinner over time.

Apart from the three main causes of hair thinning, there is still a lot of reasons why it happens most of the time. This may include the foods that you eat, the medications that you take, or the diseases that you currently have. Since prevention is better than cure, it is important to take the necessary steps and prevent it from happening. To do this, here are a few tips that you can follow:

  • Have a healthy lifestyle

Living healthy is one of the best things to do to prevent hair thinning. It does not only bring benefits to your hair, but also to your entire body as well. Exercise more often and eat foods that are rich in protein, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and Vitamin C. Always make sure that the foods you eat are always in the right amount. Do not eat less or excessively.

  • Use safe and quality hair products

Make sure that the products you use on your hair are of good quality. Watch out for toxic components such as lead or mercury since they can cause hair loss and scalp irritation. Safe products are those that are approved and recommended by professionals. If possible, do a background check to see if a product is legitimate, and to avoid hair problems.

  • Avoid exposure to heat

Frequent heat exposure can weaken the hair structure and destroy the proteins that build it. It can also make the hair brittle and makes it easy to pull out. That is why you should limit the use of hair blowers and heat treatments. It is also a good practice to wear a hat when walking under the sun to prevent the direct heat from damaging your hair.

  • Avoid over-styling

Excessive pulling of hair to achieve different styles is harmful to your scalp and hair. Whenever possible, be gentle on your hair and do not over-style it. Avoid tight ponytails and braids, and let them relax once in a while.

  • Keep hair and scalp clean

Maintaining proper hygiene is also one of the best practices to do to prevent hair thinning. Wash your hair regularly with an anti-dandruff shampoo that is appropriate for your hair type. For women, use hair conditioners that promote healthier and stronger hair.

If your hair is already thin, here are some of the things that you can do to prevent it from further thinning and damage:

  • Take Vitamin B7 supplements

Biotin, a common name for Vitamin B7, is available in the market. It is often recommended as the best hair-growth supplement for thinning hair. The substance can be found in meat products and leafy vegetables. Hence, eating these foods while regularly taking biotin supplements can improve hair growth. Just remember to seek the advice of a professional about the right dosage that you have to take.

  • Massage the scalp regularly

Massaging the scalp using nutritive oil  is a natural way of improving hair growth in thin areas. The circular motion of the hand while massaging encourages blood flow in the scalp and hair follicles. Meanwhile, the nutritive oil contains essential minerals that promote healthy hair. It also prevents early hair damage and restores the strength of your hair. You can try coconut oil or egg oil if you have no available nutritive oil.

  • Consult a physician

If you notice the early signs of hair thinning, consult a doctor immediately. He can identify the possible factors that cause your hair to become thin. He can also give you a list of medications that you can try to restore your hair growth. In the market, the most popular medication is minoxidil. It is usually available in the form of cream and can be applied directly to the scalp. However, you should be aware of the risks and side effects of this product.

  • Improve your lifestyle

Consistent exposure to stressful situation may be one of the reasons why you experience hair thinning. Consider changing your lifestyle and minimize your vices. Make time to relieve your stress and live a healthy life. If you are emotionally down, take a walk at the park and enjoy the surrounding. It is also good to check the medications that you take since there is a chance that some of them is responsible for your hair thinning. Ask your doctor if there are other alternatives for your current medications.

DIY RECIPE FOR THICKER HAIR

Since hair thinning is prevalent, the market is bombarded with different hair products that promise thick and healthy hair. However, majority of these products are too expensive and do not guarantee accurate results. Some of them may even contain harmful ingredients that may cause irritation and other problems. That is why it is important to use an all-natural homemade product to restore your hair's thickness. Here is one do-it-yourself recipe that you can easily make:

Ingredients:

  • Ginger (1 medium-sized)

Ginger contains a lot of essential minerals such as phosphorus and magnesium that can nourish hair follicles. It can improve blood circulation in the scalp and prevent it from becoming dry. The ginger extract has antibacterial properties that can suppress microbial formation and dandruff.

  • Onion (1 large-sized)

Like ginger, onion also contains antimicrobial properties that can prevent lice formations. The extract contains sulphur which strengthens hair and stops it from breakage. It can also make the hair permanently shiny when used continuously.

Honey contains a large number of antioxidants which can make your hair healthy. It can keep the hair conditioned throughout the day since it has the ability to retain moisture in the hair. Honey also minimizes clogging in the scalp which allows hairs to grow freely.

Castor oil is full of Omega-9 and Omega-6 fatty acids which is good for your hair. It can promote hair growth in thin areas and can make the hair shiny throughout the day. Castor oil also contains antiseptic properties which prevent dirt and microbial accumulation in the scalp.

The properties of olive oil make it a good remedy for hair fall and split ends. It also makes your hair stronger by locking the keratin in hair strands. In areas where hairs are relatively thin, olive oil can enhance hair growth and can keep the hair from becoming frizzy

Procedures

  1. Wash the ginger thoroughly and make sure that it is free from dirt. Wipe it with a clean cloth and remove its peel.
  2. Place the ginger in a food processor or grate it manually using a grater. You may also opt to chop it finely using a knife if you have no available equipment. Set it aside.
  3. Peel the onions and cut them in small parts.
  4. Place the chopped onions and ginger in a blender and mix it with water. After mixing, use a muslin cloth to extract their juice.
  5. Place the juice in a bowl and put 2 tbsp of honey, castor oil, and olive oil.
  6. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly and set the mixture aside.

How to apply

Before applying the treatment, wash your hair with warm water and massage your scalp gently. Warm water increases blood flow in the scalp and causes the pores in thin areas to open. After 3-5 minutes, apply the mixture in your scalp and massage it moderately in a circular motion. Concentrate on the part with thin hair. Let the mixture sit for 30 to 60 minutes per day and rinse it with a nourishing shampoo afterward. For best results, repeat the process for at least two months.

Storage

This DIY hair treatment does not need special storage conditions. You can just put it in a clean glass container and place it under normal room temperature. Avoid storing it in high-temperature areas and direct sunlight. This is because the composition of the product may change. Lastly, avoid frequent opening of the jar to prevent contamination.

For some people, the hair is one of the most important parts of their body.  Healthy and thick hairs often enhance one’s personality and boost their confidence. If the hair becomes thin and starts to fall out, it is best to assess its causes and treatment. By using the DIY recipe presented above, you can regain your hair’s vitality and you can make your hair thick and strong once again.
