5 DIY Hair Dye/Coloring Recipes for Natural Hair

Posted by Shavon Walker on

Regular hair dyes contain a variety of chemicals that are potentially harmful to the user and the environment; over 5,000 of them. It has been found that a few of these are carcinogenic like Quaternium-15. Not so appealing now, right?

The good news is that there are alternatives. They are budget-friendly, easy to do, and are just as effective. Plus, they won’t damage your hair unlike their chemical counterparts. You can opt for homemade hair dye which can be easily made using simple ingredients.

So, it’s time to go au naturel! Keen on learning how to dye your hair at home? To help you get started, here is a list of DIY hair color recipes to naturally dye different shades of hair:

1.) From Dirty to Golden Blonde

Place the following ingredients in a bowl:

  • 3 tablespoons of cinnamon (boosts lightening effects of honey)
  • 1 tablespoon of honey (retains moisture and has small amounts of peroxide that helps lighten hair)
  • 1 tablespoon of regular hair conditioner
  • Mix ingredients well. You can soften the ingredients by using a blow dryer over it.
  • Let it sit for about 30 minutes.

  • Make sure that your hair is damp.
  • Separate it into sections of 2 or 3.
  • Generously slather the mixture and cover all strands.
  • Tie hair into a bun.
  • Cover it with saran wrap or plastic bag. You can secure it with bandana.
  • Leave it on overnight (lay down a towel on pillow to avoid mess) or for at least 6 hours.
  • Rinse thoroughly.
  • Use shampoo and conditioner.
  • Dry hair.

2.) From Solid Brunette To Blonde Highlights

Place the following ingredients in a bowl:

  • 2 tablespoons of chamomile tea (lightening properties and anti-oxidants)
  • 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil (moisturizes and hastens effects of peroxide).
  • 3 tablespoons of honey (contains peroxide which lightens hair).
  • 3 tablespoons of your favorite hair conditioner (will function as the base to keep your ingredients together)
  • Mix ingredients

  • Apply to hair and utilize as normal conditioner
  • Seal the container after use. To make sure it lasts a few days and inhibit bacterial growth, store in ventilated area and away from heat. [Note that honey is also antibacterial.]

Can be applied 3 to 4 times a week. Shake/mix before every use. Results show after the third week and change intensifies with prolonged use. This will keep dying your hair a deeper color with prolonged use.

3.) From Light Brown to Dark Brunette

Note: Start by putting on clothes that you don’t mind getting stained. Slather oil into your face and neck for to avoid staining as well. Put on a pair of latex gloves.

  • In a stainless steel pot, estimate the amount the dye you want.
  • For every tablespoon of black walnut hull powder (colorant), add in ¾ cup of water.
  • Boil for 30 minutes.
  • Mix and let it cool down.

Note: This dye stains everything, observe caution during application or opt to do it outside [the home].

  • Place a towel (one you don’t mind staining) over shoulders and apply dye.
  • Use a cup to scoop mixture and pour on hair roots and hair strands.
  • You may also use cotton balls or directly dunk the hair into the pot.
  • Let sit for 5 to 20 minutes or until desired shade.
  • Rinse well but gently. Air dry.

Re-dye as often as necessary.

4.) Any Shade to Red

  • 100 grams of 100% Henna powder
  • Water
  • 1/4 cup Lemon juice or vinegar

Directions - Day before application

  • The day before dyeing your hair, pour 100g of 100% henna powder (colorant) in a bowl.
  • Add enough water until you have a fluffy paste.
  • Stir in ¼ cup of lemon juice or vinegar.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and let set for 6 to 12 hours. Test by dabbing on palm. Wait for 5 minutes. Rinse. The dye is ready when the spot turns orange.

Directions - Day of application

  • Wear an old t-shirt.
  • To protect from unintentional dying, cover hairline, ears, and skin with coconut oil.
  • Wear gloves. [May also lay out rag to protect floor.]
  • Apply henna paste starting from roots to the tips.
  • Make sure everything is covered and massage the mixture well. May add water if mixture is too dry.
  • Wrap your hair with plastic wrap and let the dye sit for 6 hours
  • Rinse thoroughly.
  • Apply a regular conditioner and follow directions on bottle
  • Wait for dye to oxidize (3-4 days), meaning it will take this long to before your hair reaches its final color in the coloring process. Washing your hair before this time risks the chance of you losing your new hair color as it transitions.

5. From Gray to A Darker Shade

In a heatproof container,

  • Place 1 tablespoon of dried sage (darkens hair shade)
  • 1 tea bag of black tea (darkens hair shade),
  • and 1 cup of water.
  • Cover.
  • Let steep for about 15 minutes.
  • Strain.

  • Wash hair with regular shampoo
  • Use liquid as a final rinse after washing your hair.
  • Apply to roots and the strands.
  • Rinse.

Use regularly for desired results. Excess product should be kept in the fridge. This would stay usable for 2-3 days.
